Table 1.3 shows the median age
of Santa Monica’s population increased from 37.9 in
1990 to 39.3 years of age in 2000. The largest
population gain from 1990 to 2000 occurred in the
age group of 45-54. This group reflects a 35.9%
increase from 1990 to 2000. As of the 2000 census,
4.1% of the City’s population consisted of
pre-school age children under the age of five and
11.9% are school age between 5-19 years old. The
City’s age distribution shows a significant
concentration in the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups,
which combined, comprise 40.1% of the population.
Santa Monica’s median age of
39.3 reflects an older age profile compared to Los
Angeles County with a median age of 32.0. The
population of Santa Monica has about half as many
youth, 16% age 19 or under, as compared to Los
Angeles County with 31%. On the other end of the
age spectrum, Santa Monica has a higher percentage
of residents over the age of 65, 14.4%, compared to
Los Angeles County with 9.7% over age 65.
