Construction of the Colorado Avenue Esplanade, located between the new Expo Light Rail Station at 4th Street to Ocean Avenue, continues with new sidewalk installation along the north side of Colorado Avenue. While the first permanent piece of the project has been completed - the charcoal gray entrance near Parking Structure 8 - much work remains before the two-color pavers are installed.
Workers have upgraded storm drain systems, repositioned underground utilities, and moved traffic signals in preparation for new curbs and gutters to be poured from 4th Street to 2nd Street in mid-June 2015. Work will progress westbound on the north side of Colorado Avenue in the first phase of the project while simultaneous work progresses at the 2nd Street sewer vault.
Unlike most construction projects where trees are planted toward the end of the project, new trees will be planted as workers complete each section of Colorado Esplanade.
Ocean Avenue and 4th Street will remain open to traffic, as well as the westbound lanes along Colorado Avenue, but drivers are asked to use Broadway and Olympic boulevards for eastbound trips. Businesses will remain open during construction.
The newly designed promenade will connect the Expo Light Rail station to Ocean Avenue, the Pier, and the Palisades Garden Walk park. The reconfigured roadway will expand bicycle and pedestrian facilities and increase landscaping and public art to create a visual and functional focal point between the Downtown and Civic Center.
