Ripped off by a Santa Monica
Business?
Here are some tips for protecting your rights:
- Complain as soon as possible after the incident.
- Direct your complaint to someone with authority to solve it. If you cannot settle the problem in person or by phone, put your complaint in writing to the store manager or owner.
- Try to be courteous and reasonable. This encourages cooperation.
- Be prepared to prove all unfair treatment. Write down the dates and names when you speak to company representatives.
Keep copies of all documents relating to your complaint.
- If the company does not resolve your complaint within a fair period of time, contact the City Attorney's Consumer Protection Unit for assistance.

How do I file a complaint?
Stop by the City Attorney's Office for a complaint form, or call and ask that one be sent to you. The complaint form must be completed and signed to be processed. Please include
legible copies of sales receipts, advertisements, contracts, canceled checks and documents pertaining to the transaction. You can
submit the initial complaint form.
What happens to my complaint?
We will analyze it to determine the best course of action. In many cases, we send a letter to the business requesting that they respond with their position. We investigate every complaint and will follow through by notifying you of the results.
Discriminated Against by a
Santa Monica Business?
The law requires that all businesses provide equal treatment,
accommodations, and services to all people. It is illegal for any business to discriminate on the basis of a person's sex, race, religion, national origin, or disability.
If you are looking to buy or rent a dwelling in Santa Monica, keep in mind that to deny anyone housing because of race, age, children, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, religion or AIDS is against local and state law.
If you have been discriminated against by a Santa
Monica business or denied housing for one of these
reasons, contact the City
Attorney's Office.
