The Santa Monica Farmers Markets require all prepared and packaged food vendors to produce their products in a Certified Commercial Kitchen and do not accept Cottage Food Operations. Additionally, All farmers market vendors are responsible for compliance with the Health Code Requirements for Community Events in LA County.

(Note:  Only farmers are admitted to sell processed agricultural products such as cheese, oils, olives, juices, jams, nuts and pickles)

In addition to the stall fees each SMFMs vendor shall pay a legislative fee of $2.00 for each market attended.  These cumulative fees are then remitted to the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) on a quarterly basis.  The CDFA utilizes these fees to administer and regulate CFM’s throughout the state.

How to Apply

Step 1 - Register

Please click here to register with the City's PlanetBids system.  Register under code 96138 - "Food Preparation Services."

Step 2 - Wait and Prepare

Once registered, you will be automatically notified by email when the application period opens.

While waiting, take some time to review the Prepared and Packaged Food FAQs and the Prepared Food Applicant Evaluation Criteria to determine how competitive your business will be. Find ways to modify your business to be a more competitive applicant based on the selection criteria.  Keep in mind, we receive approximately 3 -5 applications for each available space so it's a highly competitive process.

Step 3 - Application Time

When you receive the email notification from PlanetBids, follow the links in the email to download the application materials.

Step 4 - MANDATORY, Q & A for Applicants

Attend a pre-application meeting for a brief presentation, and meet with the Farmers Market staff to have your questions about the evaluation and selection process answered.

Step 5 - Submit Your Application

Complete and turn in your completed application by the indicated deadline - late or incomplete applications are not accepted.  Be sure to utilize the application checklist to ensure you have all the necessary components.


  • City of Santa Monica Business License (to be purchased once you are selected to participate)
  • Public Health Operating Permit (for commercial kitchen facility or restaurant)
  • Board of Equalization Permit (for taxable products).
  • Community/Seasonal Event Health Permit issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Health.  (Issued after vendor is accepted and renewable quarterly)

What else do I need to know?

All Santa Monica Farmers Markets comply with the City wide Non-Recyclable Food Service Container Ban and additionally require vendors to use compostable cutlery and straws.


Once selected, each Farmers Market vendor is required to sign a participation agreement and acknowledging receipt of the Farmers Market Rules and Regulations as well as sign a hold harmless agreement.
