Playwright and Annenberg Community Beach House 2012 Writer in Residence Lucy Wang starts her 10-week residency with an afternoon of reflection and storytelling exchange. Come share your stories of transformation and transcendence related to the New Year/New Beginnings (questions/story prompts listed on the reservation page), any way you like it – on paper, on your feet, with or without photographs. Feel free to bring pen and paper, laptop, or tablet; if there’s time she will also lead a writing exercise. Experience the magic and the power of our collective stories, and leave renewed and recharged! Ms. Wang's Residency Blog: beachhouseair.blogspot.com.
Lucy Wang begins her Writer’s Residency January 16, working out of an office on the second floor of the Marion Davies Guest House through March 26, 2012. Her plan for the term is to work on a new play. Wang began her career as a bond trader on Wall Street and was Deputy Chief of Staff during Mayor Dinkins’ administration. In addition to plays, Wang has written a young adult novel and two short films (one of which she directed), sold a pilot to Disney, performed standup comedy, and her manuscripts are archived at the Huntington Library Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino. She earned her B.A. in Asian Studies/Economics at the University of Texas at Austin, and an MBA in Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Sonakinetography #3, 1968 Pacific Standard Time performance installation: Channa Horwitz's Variations on Sonakinetography #3
Monday, January 23, 6:30 - 10pm
Info/Reserve: www.annenbergbeachhouse.com/beachculture
For 50 years, Artist Channa Horwitz created a record of her experiments in “composing time” through drawing and painting. With a rigorously selected alphabet of graphs, circles, squares, and lines she found unexpected freedoms, extending dance notation into a visual and conceptual language that is separate from bodies in space. Her “Sonakinetography” series are drawings that may find expression in multiple practices, including dance, musical composition and installation, in solo and ensemble configurations. What looks like a numbered, geometric structure of linear logic becomes fertile ground for sound, rhythm, and dance: an open-source code that encourages perpetual change and arrangement. The evening will include a performance of Poem Opera for 8, and two interpretations of Sonakinetography #3: a light show and dance choreographed by Horwitz's daughter Ellen Davis, and a musical performance by percussionist Corey Fogel. Please note that the evening will be presented in a “performance installation” style, with no seats, and no set time for visitors to arrive. All short pieces will be performed twice, with an interlude screening of Horwitz archival video.
Channa Horwitz was born and raised in Los Angeles, and received degrees from Cal State Northridge and Cal Arts. Current exhibition: Falling off a Cliff at Francois Ghebaly Gallery in Culver City. Recent exhibitions include a solo at Aanant & Zoo, Berlin, and FRIEZE Frame in London. She will have a retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Dresden in the fall of 2012.
Channa Horwitz’s Variations on Sonakinetography #3 is supported by the California/International Art Foundation ( C/IAF) and François Ghebaly Gallery. Presented as part of the Live Performance section of Pacific Standard Time, an initiative of the Getty whose presenting sponsor is Bank of America. Special thanks to Lyn Kienholz.
