Education: School Garden Programs
School Gardening Program is an award-winning, innovative program that placed an organic vegetable garden onto each campus of the Santa Monica-Malibu School District (SMMUSD). The program was developed in 1995 as a partnership between the City of Santa Monica, the School District and Common Ground (a non-profit organization affiliated with the University of California Cooperative Extension) to construct educational gardens at Santa Monica public schools.
The program is now partially funded by the City with day-to-day operation, volunteer coordination, and other operating costs being provided by the Food Services Department - SMMUSD.
SMMUSD provides a program manager, administrative assistance and the resources of their maintenance staff.
A green house was constructed at Santa Monica High School and has been used to grow plants from seedlings to plant in the other gardens.
Elementary and middle school students participate in field trips to the high school for science related in-services, lead entirely by high school students.
All students participate in field trips to the local Farmers’ Markets and local participating farms
For more information contact SMMUSD Food Service Program (310) 450-8338 or visit
