Landscape Landscape
Sustainable Landscape Professionals
The City of Santa Monica has set a goal to become water self-sufficient by the year 2020. In addition, the State of California is requiring all urban water retailers, such as Santa Monica, to reduce their water use 20% by the year 2020. Since much of our water is wasted by inefficient irrigation systems and plants that are not adapted for our climate, the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment (OSE) has created the Sustainable Landscape Professional (SLP) Program to help educate members of our local professional community to use water more efficiently in their landscape projects.

Since 2006, the SLP Program has been the local source for landscape professionals to share pertinent information about sustainable landscaping. This information includes the latest technologies in water-efficient irrigation systems, smart irrigation controllers, climate appropriate plants, rainwater harvesting, permeable paving and more. In order to improve the implementation of the City’s local landscaping requirements that conform to the State’s Model Landscape Ordinance which requires licensed professionals to design and install permitted landscapes, the SLP Program has expanded into two new and distinct professional program groups and educational series: the Sustainable Landscape Architecture Professionals (SLAP) Program and the Sustainable Landscape Installation Professionals (SLIP) Program.
