The City of Santa Monica has set a goal to become water self-sufficient by the year 2020. In addition, the State of California is requiring all urban water retailers, such as Santa Monica, to reduce their water use 20% by the year 2020. Since much of our water is wasted by inefficient irrigation systems and plants that are not adapted for our climate, the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment (OSE) has created classes for sustainable landscape professionals to help educate members of our local professional community to use water more efficiently in their landscape projects.

Since 2006, the City has been the local source for landscape professionals to share pertinent information about sustainable landscaping. This information includes the latest technologies in water-efficient irrigation systems, smart irrigation controllers, climate appropriate plants, rainwater harvesting, permeable paving and more. Currently the City is working with the landscape industry to co-sponsor educational events throughout the community. Check our calendar for upcoming events. Additionally, in order to improve the implementation of the City’s local landscaping requirements that conform to the State’s Model Landscape Ordinance which requires licensed professionals to design and install permitted landscapes, the City will hold classes that help professionals prepare plans for submittal to the City and install landscapes that pass inspection by the City.

Classes are held at Santa Monica College Bundy Campus. Visit the Continuing and Community Education website: commed.smc.edu to sign up or call (310) 434-3400. Classes are FREE.
