Landscape Standards Overview

The Water-Efficient Landscape and Irrigation Standards pdf have been revised as of February, 2012:

Some highlights from the new Standards:
  1. Greywater systems are easier to install with some new exemptions
  2. State MAWA and ETWU calculations are required on plan sets
  3. Landscape Elevations may be submitted in lieu of a grading plan
  4. Weather Based Irrigation Controllers that are EPA WaterSense labeled are approved for installation

Plan Submittal Requirements

 

Inspection Requirements for New Construction, Major Remodels

  1. Underground inspection before covering underground pipes
  2. Final compliance inspection
 

Backflow Prevention

  • A plumbing permit is required for the installation of testable backflow prevention devices. Contact our Building and Safety division at 310 458-8355. More information: Safe Plumbing Practices pdf
 

Water Features, Fountains or Ponds

  • The use of a recirculation system is mandatory.
  • Fountains, ponds or other decorative water features, excluding swimming pools or spas, shall have a footprint of less than 25 square feet in area. 
  • Water features must use a water recirculation system (no once-through systems)
  • Water used in water features must remain in water features and not spray onto surrounding landscape and hardscape.
 

* For projects that had permits issued between May 23, 2008 and January 31, 2010,
the Landscape and Irrigation Standards that were in effect during that period shall apply.

For projects that had permits issued between February 1, 2010 to January 31, 2011,
the Landscape and Irrigation Standards that were in effect during that period shall apply.
