Class Schedule for 2012 Announced

Join us for The Green Garden Academy, the official school of sustainable gardening! This 12-part monthly series of classes is for Santa Monica gardeners who want to grow a beautiful, worry-free garden that will last for years. Each class walks participants through a different topic to help make your garden a huge success and the envy of your neighbors.

Taught by Russell Ackerman, ecological landscape design and water resource conservation expert, the classes will be held on one Saturday per month in the Main Library’s Multipurpose Room, 601 Santa Monica Blvd. Participants can earn up to 34 total class units; 17 units are needed to graduate. Join in this fun and informative series at any time.

Classes are free and open to the public. Class space is limited. The Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. For special disabled services, call Library Administration (310) 458-8606 one week prior to events.

There will be no pre-registration or waiting lists for the Green Garden Academy 2012. Class space will be first-come, first-served, with a sign-in for each meeting.

Green Garden Academy classes are held on Saturdays, from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Jan  21 – Introduction to Sustainable Landscape Design and the Green Garden Academy (4 units)
Learn about the City of Santa Monica’s new sustainable landscape design program- the Green Garden Academy; we’ll cover the basic principles of sustainable landscaping, and get you on the road to a beautiful garden; also learn about local landscape and irrigation requirements, rebates and grant programs.  Main Library

Feb 11 – Lawn Be Gone, Part I (3 units)
Learn tips for safe lawn removal, choosing plants to replace lawn and plants for parkways. Main Library

Feb 11 – Green Garden Honor Academy 2:00 - 3:00 pm

Mar 17 – Compost Workshop (3 units)

The ins and outs of compost. How to build a worry free pile. Discover easy soil building techniques. Find out what soil you have and how to improve it.  Main Library

Apr 14 -  Plant Palette: Mediterranean Plants (3 units)
Think you can only plant California natives to be sustainable? Think again! Learn to choose climate-appropriate plants from the Mediterranean plant palette that offer a variety of colors, textures and fragrance.  Main Library

May 12 – Edible Landscaping (2 units)
Learn how to incorporate edibles into your garden, including raised vegetable beds and planters Discover special planting tips on maximizing your yield.  Main Library

June 23 – ‘No Sweat’ Garden Maintenance Tips (3 units)
A “green” garden requires 60% less maintenance. Find out the secrets to reducing your garden chores and increasing your garden enjoyment. Learn how and when to prune your plants; how to select a mulch, how to handle pests, and when to add compost. Main Library

July 21 - Water Wise Irrigation (4 units)
Learn how and when to water your plants, including how to program your controller. Discover the basics of water wise irrigation. Find out about irrigation systems that meet local requirements including drip irrigation, subsurface irrigation and rotary sprayheads You’ll also learn about the vital interaction between plants, soil and water. Main Library

Aug 18 - Lawn Be Gone Part II (3 units)
Building on the previous class, continue the exploration of lawn alternatives then go on a tour of local gardens with successful conversions to lawn alternatives. Meet the homeowners and their garden designers. Meet at the Main Library

Sept 15 – Bird and Butterfly Gardens (3 units)
Learn to create a beautiful habitat for attracting birds, butterflies and good bugs. Also find out how you can reduce your maintenance and chemical use in the garden. Discover the secrets of building a healthy soil and ultimately a healthy garden. – Main Library

Oct 13 -  Plant Palette: Native Plants (4 units)
Learn to choose climate-appropriate plants from our California native plant palette that offer a variety of colors, textures and fragrance. A must for the native garden enthusiast! Main Library

Nov 10 - Overview of Sustainable Landscape Design (2 units)
Apply the principles of sustainable landscaping to your next garden design; Learn to draw up a map for a beautiful garden. Discover the secrets to a simple, effective irrigation plan.  Main Library

Dec 8 –Green Garden Academy Graduation
“Green Thumbs Up” Awards  :   Main Library    :    34 units total – 17 needed to graduate….


Green Garden Honor Academy 2012

Graduates of the Green Garden Academy transform knowledge into action! Discuss upcoming city-wide projects for designing, installing and maintaining sustainable landscapes in our community. Set up a schedule of events and begin coordinating ‘Green Garden’ activities.
