Hazardous Materials: Hazardous Waste Center for Small Business
|

A business that generates hazardous waste is considered to be a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) if it generates less than 220 pounds or approximately 27 gallons of hazardous waste per month, or a maximum of 2.2 pounds of acutely hazardous waste per month. CESQGs are required to manage hazardous waste in accordance with all state and federal regulations, although they have been granted special status to allow them to participate in the city's program. Saving you Time:
If you are a Small Quantity Generator in the City Of Santa Monica, you may bring your hazardous waste to the City's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. Waste is accepted by appointment only, (310) 458-8255.

Transportation of Hazardous Waste:
Proper Transport of Hazardous Waste: State and federal law prohibits the transport of over 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste at any one time. A special variance may be issued through the City to allow a business to legally transport between 15 and up to 27 gallons or 220 pounds of hazardous waste at one time to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. No variance is necessary for shipments of up to 15 gallons. Businesses may request this variance when making their drop-off appointment. When transporting hazardous waste to the collection facility, all materials should be in an original container if possible and covered with a secure fitting lid. The contents of each container must be clearly labeled. For additional information contact the Office of Sustainability and the Environment at (310) 458-2213.

The Household Hazardous Waste Center is celebrating 21 years of service – and to make it official, a mural project was unveiled along with a new modular office space made out of used shipping containers. Yes, that’s right, shipping containers.

The mural was designed by Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center artist in residence, Juan Carlos Munoz Hernandez and several Teen Center youth. The intent was to create a flexible art piece to illustrate what comes into the HHW Center from the community, and to create an educational opportunity for the teen painters. It was a success. But don’t take our word for it. Come down and visit the center for yourself. 2500 Michigan Ave. just East of the 10 Freeway at Cloverfield
