Located at 333 Olympic Dr, at the corner of 4th St. and Olympic, the 117,000 square foot Public Safety Facility is the City of Santa Monica’s first major facility designed and built with the intent of minimizing its lifecycle impact on the natural environment while providing for the health and comfort of the building’s occupants. As the headquarters for the Police and Fire Departments in addition to the 9-1-1 center and other facilities, the importance of maintaining the indoor environment quality is imperative.

In addition to providing a healthy and comfortable place to work, the City demonstrated its commitment to the environment by designing the facility to be extremely resource and energy efficient. As a measure of its sustainability, the structure is the first City facility to be awarded the US Green Building Council’s LEED Silver certification. The building was designed by Cannon Design and completed in Fall of 2003 with a construction cost of $47 million.

The design features sustainable building strategies such as:

Energy Efficiency : Efficient furnace and computer controls, an underfloor air distribution system and automatic daylighting controls are used to achieve performance exceding Title 24 Code by 36%.

Water Conservation : The building catches water from the roof and additionally uses recycled water for irrigation and flushing of toilets.

Materials : Where practical the building uses recycled materials; for example in floor tiles. Choice of materials also impacts energy heating and cooling efficiency.
