Education School Garden Programs
|
| School Gardening Program is an award-winning, innovative program that
placed an organic vegetable garden onto each campus of the Santa Monica-Malibu
School District (SMMUSD). The program was developed in 1995 as a partnership
between the City of Santa Monica, the School District and Common Ground (a
non-profit organization affiliated with the University of California
Cooperative Extension) to construct educational gardens at Santa Monica public
schools. |
 |
The program is now partially funded by the City with day-to-day
operation, volunteer coordination, and other operating costs being provided by
the Food Services Department - SMMUSD.
- SMMUSD provides a program manager, administrative assistance and the
resources of their maintenance staff.
- A green house was constructed at Santa Monica High School and has been used
to grow plants from seedlings to plant in the other gardens.
- Elementary and middle school students participate in field trips to the high
school for science related in-services, lead entirely by high school students.
- All students participate in field trips to the local Farmers’ Markets and
local participating farms
